There are well over 200 hundred search engines on the Internet. You may be familiar with the most well known search engines, of Google, Yahoo and MSN. This link is typically located at the bottom of the home page for the most prominent search engines, while for the less prominent they are located at the top.

Do not pay for any submission services, there are enough free offerings.

Basically, sites want you to have a simple, clean layout without too many distractions so that the spiders who roam the internet picking up and indexing all the web pages on the internet.
