A ghillie suit is basically a type of camo that is designed to look like and closely resemble the foliage and environment. It is used by outdoorsman and sportsmen to blend in perfectly with the surrounding are.
Ghillie suits that are manufactured for commercial purposes are moving to a synthetic type of fiber and process that looks nearly as if it was handmade from the natural surroundings.
Many people like to make their own ghillie suits. Home made ghillie suits are sometimes made out of camo clothing that is covered with a knit weave material. This material is then used to hold in place such things as twigs, branches, tufts of grass and other types of foliage from the area the outdoorsman is seeking to blend into naturally.
Other items that are used to make this camo style are jute and burlap as a base or turned into a poncho and then place the netting (sometimes something so simple as a volleyball net) over these. Afterwhich foliage can be attached as needed.
Additionally, some people prefer to purchase a camo poncho and then add the netting and foliage or whatever they feel they need to do to make their ghillie suit an effective accessory.
One thing of note is that ghillie suits are very difficult to clean as part of their cover work is, in fact, to be ‘dirty’ to fit into the outdoor environment. Basically, once a hand made ghillie suit is at a stage it needs to be washed there are only two real options: discard it or strip away the foliage to wash the undergarment portion and then rebuild the garment.
The aforementioned commercial ghillie suits that use synthetics as their materials are somewhat washable and are become more popular as their durability is very handy.
